The European continent is at war. Make no mistake.
When Hitler invaded Poland and Great Britain declared war on Nazi Germany, the British people understood full well what was going on. My father joined the Navy at the age of 15. My grandfather, a Royal Marine, and all the family knew what they were fighting for: and against. They stood by their country’s commitment to defend Poland. They knew Hitler would not stop there.
Today, another dictator, another little man with malice in his veins, is raining death and destruction down on Ukraine. Like Poland in 1939, a peaceful, independent, European nation.
If we fail Ukraine, we will betray our democratic conscience. We will deserve the evil we bring down on ourselves. Because Putin will not stop at Ukraine.
My father’s ships faced German submarines in Arctic waters, a blitz in the Mediterranean and torpedoes on D-Day. I sit at home in comfort, in benign, oblivious Spain, and do not raise a rifle, just a weak voice. I write on, but what good are books if the readers are dead?
In countries close to Russia, they know all about Russian soldiers. These beasts do not even spare children. If Putin were to occupy Ukraine, the violence of the repression, the executions, the rapes, the merciless subjugation of the people, followed by the eradication of their culture and identity, would be absolute.
Even so, Ukraine does not ask us to go to war for them, as we did for Poland, just for every kind of assistance to defend its people. To weaken and eventually cripple Russia’s warring capability. This strategy is already working, but slowly.
As I type this, people are being hit by Russian missiles in Kharkiv and Kyiv, and starved in Oleshky.
If you know the Ukrainian people, their depth, their strong love for one another and their land, you will believe along with me that they will ultimately prevail, with or without us.
Let it be sooner. Let it be with us. Listen to Caolan Robertson, Denys Davydov, Jake Broe. Demand action from your government. Make a donation if you can. But support Ukraine.
